RWR Day 4 – Survived

The Climb was every bit as tough as I thought it would be. How do you take on a task that is too large? Carve it up into little pieces and be patient.

Note: This will be an abbreviated blog because of a slow internet connection tonight. I'll edit it this weekend with more information.

Day 4 Run

Much of the climb today was too steep for me to run. I have a dozen of ultra marathon friends who could have eaten this for lunch--but not me, I did lots of walking. Three thoughts dominated my day: 1) My legs cannot be so dead at the end of this day, that I cannot continue tomorrow. 2) Break it up into manageable chunks--a tenth of a mile at a time, from curve to curve, "to that tree", etc. 3) And Zika Rea's marathon advice (probably spoken a little more colorfully than I'll say it here), "When you get tired and question if you can make it to then end, ask yourself 'Can I keep doing what I am doing?' If 'yes', then keep doing it."

Here are the details for today... https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1176730743. It took nearly 3 hours to cover the 3300' climb in 13 miles. But it's done!

Photos and Video

We posted several photos on http://www.BRPWeather.com/; we have more but again, a slow internet connection prohibits us from posting more. We'll post more this weekend. I have photos from Otter Creek, the James River, and the first 5 or so from the climb. Go to BRPWeather.Com, then zoom into the north end of of the Parkway in the Google Map to see our photos between the James River and Peaks of Otter. And... you can upload your photos to BRPWeather.com also; just click on the Photo link and follow the process--it's quick and easy! We hope this will become "Instagram for the Blue Ridge Parkway."

We do have a few videos for you to get a feel for what happened today...

Location Information

We are staying at Peaks of Otter Lodge and had dinner here as well. The Lodge and beautiful Abbott Lake (just out everyone's back door) were built in 1964. If you are looking for 5-star accommodations, this is not your place. But if you are looking for a comfortable room, outstanding food, and one of the most beautiful surroundings in the world, this is it!

Parkway Attractions and History

I have lots to put here, but I have run out of time.

Next...

We have a little glitch tomorrow related to construction on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A section is closed, but the Parkway Staff is working it out for me to run through (Many thanks!!!). But, it does mean that I have to run to the end of the construction, making it more than a 25-mile day. Here's the plan... http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/336840865
